2004-05 Annual Report
On August 23, 2004 the Council held a phone conference meeting.
It was agreed to use AT&T Operator Assisted Services for future phone conferences
as participants will then not have to remember to call the MSBA office for entry.
A preliminarydiscussion of the next annual CLE event was had.
The abbreviated conference was continued by telephone on September 1, 2004.
The need for early extensive planning was agreed to by all and the dates of
October 8th and 9th , 2004 were chosen for a Council retreat at the St. Cloud
Radisson Hotel "for fleshing out" the Spring 2005 Success Conference.
The date of April 1, 2005 was already chosen for the conference and return to
the Hilton Hotel in Brooklyn Park as the site of conference was also agreed
upon. Commencing a Newsletter was discussed but no action was taken in that
regard.
On October 8th and 9th, 2004, the Fall Council Retreat was held at the Radisson
Hotel in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Commencement of a Section quarterly newsletter
was agreed upon. Karl Friedrichs described his role as a prior newsletter editor.
Jason Hoffman volunteered to commence activation of the Newsletter and act as
its editor. Various other topics were addressed including the Section's Attorney
Referral Project, association with the New Lawyers and Practice Management Sections,
association with the four Law Schools in Minnesota, and recruitment of new members.
Extensive time was then given to "brain storming" regarding the agenda
(CLE and otherwise) for the day-long Section Success Conference to be held on
April 1, 2005, its sponsors and vendors.
On October 21, 2004, Patrick W. Kelly and Diana Longrie attended the New Lawyer's
Section Monthly Meeting in Minneapolis. They were given an opportunity to speak
to the attendees about possible joint efforts and events of the two groups.
On December 24, 2004, the chair, Patrick W. Kelly, with approval of the Council,
mailed formal inivitations to the Hamline, University of Minnesota, St. Thomas
and William Mitchell Law Schools seeking law student membership in our Section,
inviting attendance at our planned Success Conference, and requesting consideration
by the groups of developing a joint mentoring/law clerk hiring program.
On April 1, 2005, the Section's Success Conference took place at the Holiday
Inn Select (former Hilton Hotel) in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. A two-track CLE
Program (Substantive Law or Practice Management) was well received. Patrick
W. Kelly and his Paralegal, Rana L. Severson presented a session on The Small
Firm Staff-Tips for Success, while Council Member, Robert Woodke presented a
session on "The Future of the Practice of Law" with Laverne Pritchard.
The dinner speaker was Supreme Court Justice, Sam Hanson. Attendance was significantly
increased from the previous year, included some paralegals, and the Council
generally felt their significant efforts in putting on this enlightening and
enjoyable day-long event were worthwhile
At the Section's Annual Membership Meeting and following upon the New Council's
Annual Meeting, also held in conjunction with the Success Conference, the following
persons were accepted as the new 2005-2006 Section Council: Diana Longrie, Chair,
Karl Friedrichs, Vice Chair, Helen Federline, Treasurer, Patricia Buss, Secretary,
with Jason Hoffman, Teresa McClain, Robert Woodke, Joseph Field and Patrick
W. Kelly rounding out the membership of the Council.

MSBA General Practice Solo and Small Firm
Section
2003-04 Annual Report
On October 17, 2003, the Section Council met, for its annual Fall meeting,
at the Town and Country Club in St. Paul. At this meeting, among other business
transacted, The Council accepted the resignation of Susan Laine as Chair of
the Section and approved the succession of Patrick W. Kelly from Vice-Chair
to acting Chair of the Section for the remainder of the 2003-2004 term. Preliminary
plans were discussed for the Annual Membership meeting which set to be held
on April 23, 2004.
On December 15, 2003, the Section Council met, via telephone conference call,
and agreed to hold a “brain-storming” Council meeting at the Radisson
Hotel in St. Cloud for the purpose of planning and implanting a unique and beneficial
annual membership meeting.
On January 30, 2004, the “brain-storming” conference of Council
Members took place in St. Cloud. New ideas for the annual CLE and Membership
day were developed, including expanding the day to a “Solo and Small Firm
Success Conference” format, with sessions on both Friday afternoon and
Saturday morning, and to include a Dinner at which, hopefully, a Supreme Court
Justice would speak to our Group.
On April 23 and April 24, 2004, the “GP, Solo and Small Firm Success
Conference” took place at the Hilton Minneapolis North Hotel in Brooklyn
Center. Corporate contributions from Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance, Westlaw
and other sponsors helped defray the costs and made the interesting and practical
CLE sessions focused on real world issues for our members, the Dinner held on
the evening of Friday , April 23rd, and other “perks” a bargain
for our membership. The Honorable Supreme Court Justice Paul H. Anderson gave
a very interesting speech touched with humor to our members at the exquisite
Dinner served by the hotel. At the membership meeting which followed, Jason
Hoffman and Teresa McClain were elected to new three year Council terms and
Karl O. Friedrichs was elected to serve out the one year remaining on the term
of Robert Schmidt, who has resigned. The other current Council Members are Helen
Federline, Melvin Ogurak, Diana Longrie-Kline, Susan Laine, Robert Woodke and
Patrick W. Kelly. At the Section Council meeting which immediately followed
the membership meeting, Patrick W. Kelly was elected Chair of the Section for
the 2004-05 year, Diana Longrie-Kline Vice Chair, Karl O. Friedrichs, Secretary
and Helen Federline, Treasurer. Their contact information is available on the
MSBA website.
Accomplishments during the past year included strengthening of the Section’s
Referral Directory Project, the production of a unique and well received Annual
Meeting and CLE Conference and the conception of some new ways for our membership
to “network” with other sections of the Bar, including the goal
of actually commencing “stand-ups” with the new Lawyers and other
sections this coming Fall. A “standup” will be brief educational
and social events at pleasant settings for members of one to three sections.
Another goal will be to reinvigorate and expand our communication ability by
way of developing unique and different types of “newsletters”.

B. Activities of the GPSSF Section in 2002-2003.
1.) 2002 Fall Council Meeting was held at Town and Country Club in
St. Paul on October 11, 2002 to discuss the upcoming activities and projects
of the year. The council was updated by Patrick Kelly on the progress of the
Referral Book project. The general theme and proposed speakers were identified
for the Annual Meeting and CLEs in April.
2.) 2003 Annual Meeting and CLEs were presented on April 25, 2003
at the Minneapolis Airport Hilton in Bloomington. The CLEs were in three individual
sessions. An attendant could sign up for one, two or all three sessions. Following
the third session, West Group presented various products for the small office
and solo firm. West Group generously sponsored a Networking Reception after
their session with a beautiful array of wines and cheeses, which was well
attended and enjoyed by all. West Group also provided a door prize -a PDA!
During the free luncheon, the Section had its general membership meeting.
There was lively discussion which delayed the election of officers until a
later date.
3.) Election of Officers occurred during a phone conference with the
Section Executive Council on May 8, 2003. See election results above. There
was a discussion regarding the Section's participation in and with the Midwest
Leadership Conference and ABA Solo and Small Firm Section on October 16&
17.
4.) MSBA Convention Section Meeting of the membership of the GPS&SF
Section occurred at 7:30 am on June 19, 2003 at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis.
There was a lively discussion regarding the opportunities for the Section.
Once again, West Group hosted the Section with a lovely buffet of breakfast
items and juices. West Group presented their products that are focused on
the solo and small practitioner. West Group also provided a door prize of
TWINS tickets Mike Tikkanen presented to the group about his workshop services
which may be helpful and of interest to the Section. His actual workshop could
be presented at an upcoming "Stand Up". (See below.)
C. Accomplishments.
1.) The major 2002-03 accomplishment for the Section, in addition to the
Annual CLE, was the finalization and publication of the Referral Book.
The Referral Book subcommittee was lead by Patrick Kelly. Under Patrick's
leadership, the subcommittee compiled and published the initial edition of
the names and resumes of approximately twenty members of the Section who are
interested in accepting referrals in their areas of practice. The "publication'
was via email. The book is really an electronic book in a MicroSoft® Word
searchable database. The long term objective is to have the information on
the MSBA website. If anyone is interested in being added to the next edition
of the Referral book, please contact Helen Federline at "hmf@visi.com"
for information.
2.) "Stand-Ups" are now in the future of the Section, the
logical extension to the Referral Book project. A "Stand-Up" is
a short (30-45 minutes) educational Section meeting on a topic of interest
to the Section members, followed by a social hour. At the Annual Meeting,
the membership approved moving forward on this idea of bringing Section members
together to learn about and discuss a topic in a social setting. The purpose
is for both education and camaraderie. The Stand-Ups should give the attorneys
listed in the Referral Book an opportunity to become acquainted and, therefore,
feel more comfortable referring clients. Watch for Stand-Ups in 2003-2004.
3.) The 2003 Newsletter Spring Edition of the MSBA GPS&SF Section was published in April by the Editor, Karl O. Friedrichs. Karl always provides
interesting articles and important information to the Section membership.
The Section greatly appreciates Karl's generous efforts in writing and editing
the newsletter.
This Annual Report of the GPS&SF Section's activities and accomplishments
is respectfully submitted to the MSBA by the Section's Chair, Susan Laine on
this 29th day of August, 2003.
MSBA General Practice Solo and Small Firm
Section
1997-98 Annual Report
The General Practice Solo and Small Firm Section continues to provide a newsletter
to its members about four times per year. This is the most popular benefit for
section members. An effort was made to provide some short CLE programs during
1997. This effort may be renewed in the 1998-1999 bar year.
At the 1997 MSBA convention the section provided a "mini-convention" with the
encouragement of the MSBA. This mini-convention included the section's annual
meeting and a CLE program. Members of the section participated in these section-specific
programs, along with the Presidents' Reception on Thursday night, for a reduced
registration fee.
The chair of the section served as a member of the Pro Se Task Force established
by the MSBA. The task force held hearings to obtain information from attorneys,
judges, court administrators, and various law-related groups, regarding the
various concerns and challenges presented by pro se litigants. The task force
presented a report, with recommendations, at the June 1998 annual meeting of
the MSBA.
The purpose of the section is to provide programs and assistance to solo and
small firm practitioners, whether they be general practitioners or in specialty
firms. Over the years, the section's programs regarding office management and
office operations have been well received by participants.

1997-98 Chair
