cases, 5 paternity cases, 5 disputes involving other kinds of
family issues, 10 civil cases, 12 victim offender cases.
Familiarity and Experience
I took both labor law and public sector labor law classes in law
school. As an associate with Garvey Schubert & Barer in Seattle
for five years, I handled a variety of litigation including employment
litigation. I have served as an employment arbitrator with the
American Arbitration Association, and have taken the AAAs
advanced training for employment arbitrators (16 hours in San
Francisco in June 1997). I regularly attend the Minnesota CLE
Employment Law Institute, and have taken a number of other CLEs
on employment law subjects.
Other Factors Relevant to Ability to Mediate Employment
Disputes
I am on the roster and have mediated a number of employment disputes
as part of the U.S. Postal Services REDRESS programs under
which all EEOC complainants are offered mediation. In the early
80s, I was fortunate to have had a full semester course
in mediation, negotiation and arbitration in law school, including
a 12-hour simulated mediation conducted by a FMCS mediator. I
believe that I have been mediating most of my life. I have 36
credits in graduate psychology courses, and have taken 16 hours
of Sherod and Phyllis Millers training on teaching communication
skills. I have done extensive personal growth work,
and am comfortable with both the emotional and legal aspects of
employment disputes.
I am active in the ADR community. Since the Fall of 1997, I have been Chair of the Ethics Committee of the Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution (CMDR) Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association, and will be representing the Section on a panel in the ABAs first ADR Institute in Boston in the Spring of 2000. I am a practitioner member of the Academy of Family Mediators and serve on the Academys Ethics Committee.
