The MSBA's Elder Law Section Presents

"Who are You Going to Call? Preventing Financial Exploitation of Elders and What to Do When It Happens"

Stories of the financial abuse of vulnerable older persons are filling the news. Whether it be family members, attorneys-in-fact, trustees or even clergy, it appears that persons in trusted positions are finding their access to the funds of others even more tempting during these challenging economic times.

The Elder Law Section of the MSBA is hosting this CLE as a special event to address the increasing incidence of financial exploitation of older and vulnerable persons. As elder law attorneys, estate planners, and attorneys in general, how can we help prevent financial exploitation and what should we do when it happens?

The panel of presenters will cover the perspectives of county attorneys, adult protection and the private bar. The sessions will address applicable criminal and civil laws, and remedies available through county human services offices, county attorneys’ offices and civil litigation. In addition, the speakers will discuss how the documents which we draft, such as powers of attorney, get used as tools of financial abuse. What are the signs of financial exploitation? Where can our clients and family members turn? And, just as important, what are our ethical and professional obligations when we suspect the financial abuse of a vulnerable client?

Cancellation Policy:
