"An Overview of Farm Animal Confinement Laws in the U.S."

Regulation of the amount of space that a farm animal is allowed has become a public and contentious issue. Proponents of state regulation argue that cages amount to animal cruelty, while opponents assert that they are engaging in normal animal husbandry. While all fifty states have enacted some form of legislation prohibiting cruelty to animals, about thirty states exempt “common,” “normal,” or “customary” farm animal husbandry practices from coverage under the law.
